What the heck is partial quotient?

Yesterday and today in math we used a division strategy called partial quotient. Unless you teach 4th grade math you more than likely have no idea how to do this!! :)

This video will help you and your student to understand the concept. It seems foreign at first, but many students prefer this strategy all year long.

If you cannot see the video above, click here.

Shatekon Chorus
Concert Reminder

Our concert is quickly approaching!
It will be held at 7:00pm on Wednesday, 12/7/16.
I will take responsibility for Chorus members at 6:40pm, in room 360.
If you arrive earlier, stay with your parents in the Gym.
Attire is black bottoms/white tops, or look your best (no jeans, sneakers, heels, or flip flops). Boys should wear a shirt with a collar, and try to wear a tie.
5th Grade String performers and Band members will receive additional information from their instrumental teacher.
If you have questions/concerns, contact Mrs. Grebe at grebmary@shenet.org
or call her at 518-881-0580 X48360
WE NEED ALL CHORUS MEMBERS TO SOUND OUR BEST!!!

The in-school concert is at 1:20. Band and String students have already received information regarding when to come down for this. For Chorus singers, I ask that they come at 1:10. I do have a class until 1:05, and really do need a minute to run to the bathroom, so I can’t take the kids straight from class to the concert. Sorry! I hear that this is very close to lunch…no worries…as long as the students are here by the start of the concert, we will be fine.

Thank you for your help and support.

Ski Club Update from Mr. Myers

Good afternoon everyone.  Unfortunately, due to several factors, there will not be a Shatekon/ Arongen Ski Club this year.  I’m sure many of you will be getting emails soon asking about the club, if you haven’t already.  There were a few separate factors that have led to my not being available to run the club this year, and for that I apologize.  I fully intend to be able to run the club again next year, and hope that any students that were interested this year and that are still in the building in the fall of 2017 will join us next season.

Free Entrance to National Parks!

The National Park Service turns 100 years old in 2016 and we want everyone to join the party! For a free pass for all 4th Graders click here!
Additionally, on 16 days in '16, all National Park Service sites that charge an entrance fee will offer free admission to everyone.
Mark your calendar for these entrance fee–free dates in 2016:
  • January 18: Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • April 16 through 24: National Park Week
  • August 25 through 28: National Park Service Birthday
  • September 24: National Public Lands Day
  • November 11: Veterans Day
National parks are America’s Best Idea, and there are more than 400 parks available to everyone, every day. The fee-free days provide a great opportunity to visit a new place or an old favorite, especially one of the 127 national parks that normally charge an entrance fee. The others are free all of the time. Plan your visit and enjoy our country’s history and nature.

The fee waiver includes entrance fees, commercial tour fees, and transportation entrance fees. Other fees such as reservation, camping, tours, concession and fees collected by third parties are not included unless stated otherwise.

Fee-free days make parks accessible to more people. However, national parks are always economical, with entrance fees that range from $3 to $30. In addition, any fourth grade student can get a free annual pass through the Every Kid in a Park program, and active duty military and citizens with a permanent disability can also get free passes. For more information about the variety of discounted passes available, please visit the America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass page.

Bus Drill

On March 23, 2016 at 10:00AM the Transportation Department will hold an emergency preparedness drill.  This drill will include members from the Clifton Park Fire Department and the Saratoga County Sheriff Department as well as the transportation staff.  At 10:00am our fire alarm will sound and emergency personnel will be dispatched to the garage.  An actual simulation of a bus fire will occur.  This is a drill only.  It is anticipated that this drill will be approximately one hour.  Phones will be unavailable during this time.   Kindergarten runs will run as normally scheduled.

Mindset

This week we are learning about Mindsets. The main idea is people can approach school, friendships, occupations, or sports with two mindsets. One is a fixed mindset. People with a fixed mindset often feel they can't succeed when there are challenges and those that do succeed are either more capable or born with natural ability. The other mindset is growth. People with a growth mindset often feel challenges make them stronger and smarter. They will keep trying when the going gets tough, ask for help and try new ways of succeeding. We have challenged ourselves to flip our thinking, if needed, as we can grow as people, learners and citizens. Below you will find some links that we have found useful in our discussion. Make sure to watch Ormie the Pig! He's hilarious and gives a great message.

**Our faculty is reading this book to study the affects of Mindsets and achievement/growth. It's a great read for anyone!
