This week’s topics:

·         Writing –Most are finishing their fiction piece or working on editing and revising.  We’ll also be sharing our work in class.

·         Café  –  author study  – With the help of Mrs. Correa, we’ll be creating a project to present to the class and then an independent project showing our comprehension of Kate DiCamillo’s books.     

·         Vocabulary – ruler, area, perimeter, claim, raw material, Northwest Passage, expedition, Columbian exchange

·         Spelling – abbreviations

·          Grammar – pronouns

This week’s topics:

·       How to use a ruler

·       Non-standard and standard units of measurement

·       Converting customary measurements to metric  measurements

·       Measuring perimeter

We’ll begin our next study in New York history this week.  The unit is all about Explorers coming into our area, why they came and what happened as a result.  We’ll be integrating our knowledge of Native Americans and using timelines to help us keep track of all the important dates and information.  It should be very fun!

Mrs. Foong joined our class this morning and shared her knowledge of Chinese New Year!  She was kind enough to share symbols of good luck and information about the lunar calendar.  Thank you very much Mrs. Foong.

This week’s topics:

·         Writing –a fiction piece focusing on using a beginning, middle and end to help answer the who, what, when, why and how of a story.  We’ll also begin self and peer editing.

·         Café  –  comprehension – use main idea and supporting details to determine importance   

·         Vocabulary – singular, plural, possessive

·         Spelling – possessive nouns – test Friday, not Thursday

·          Grammar – possessive nouns in sentences and making nouns (singular or plural) possessive

               

This week’s topics:

·       Go over chapter 9 and 10 test

·       Mid-year review (all concepts taught)

·       Next math fact test will be 1/25/12.  Some students will be practicing addition again, while others are ready to move onto subtraction.  Check your student’s folder for a half sheet of green paper which indicates which facts they must practice.

We’ll be reviewing for our upcoming test on Thursday.  We’ll create a review page, play a electricity jeopardy game and watch different videos and power point presentations to sum up all the information taught. Please help your student by reviewing a little bit each night.

Our lab was a success!

Today we completed our first complete circuit lab and it worked wonderfully! We used many materials from an electricians tool box such as fahnestock clips, battery holders, wires, bulbs and 9V batteries!  It was a fun day!

ELA - This week we’ll focus on beginning our ELA state test preparations.  We’ll explore main idea vs. details.  How to use the title of passages as clues of the main idea, authors’ purpose and giving summaries of texts read will be developed too. Distinguishing between theme and main idea will also be revisited.                **We kicked off our first author study of Kate DiCamillo!  She is the author of classics such as Because of Winn-Dixie and The Tale of Despereaux

               

This week’s topics:

·         Writing – write a reflection on 2011

·         Café  –  accuracy – skip the tricky word and use context clues and familiar word parts to decode  

·         Vocabulary – circuits, complete circuit, parallel circuit, series circuit

·         Spelling – NO SPELLING THIS WEEK

·          Grammar – review skills taught

Math -  This week we’ll begin chapter 9 – Geometry.  This study will expand students’ basic knowledge of plane and solid figures (2-D and 3-D) to include ideas about polygons, symmetry and congruence.  Please refer to the parent letter that was sent home 1-3-12) specific to math information.

                Students will be taking their first fact test January 10^th.  All students will be tested on addition facts to 20.  If your student passes, next Tuesday they will be taking the subtraction test then eventually multiplication, division and mixed operations.  If your student does not pass, they will continue to practice addition facts until they pass.  Each student will get 3 minutes to answer 60 equations. Remember, the idea of memory is 2-3 second recall, not using strategies to figure answers out!

·         Two-dimensional figures

·         Three-dimensional figures

·         Solving problems looking for patterns

·         Angles

 Science - In science we’ll learn to use the new vocabulary listed above.  We’ll also learn the symbols that electricians use to illustrate and talk about their work (secret code).  Our lab should be very exciting!  We’ll create a closed circuit and prepare for series and parallel circuit building by reading non-fiction information.
